about

Portrait of Robbert Camps

Hi, I'm Robbert. I'm a very versatile computer scientist with a Master of Science in Engineering (ir., MScEng). I have a lot of experience making industrial cameras understand what they see. Nowadays I close the gap between software and hardware in industrial automation, having experience in both domains.

Through my company RCAM I'm available as a freelancer for anything on this page. Outside work you'll find me doing improv theatre, making music, or building small games.

2021 – 2025

CTO, Head of Software

Heliovision, custom machine vision for industry
  • Led all software at a company that builds bespoke machine vision systems: nothing off the shelf, every project tailored, bringing state-of-the-art vision technology straight onto factory floors and work sites, where the real challenges are rarely the expected ones.
  • Grew with the company from 3 to 10 people. Ran the day-to-day work of six engineers and carried responsibility for every piece of software we delivered.
  • Organized building an internal library of reusable components, so new projects no longer started from scratch: a real architectural challenge when no two projects look alike.
  • Hands-on across many sub-fields of computer vision and the hardware that goes with it, for clients such as Colruyt, Katoen Natie, Jan De Nul and Zeeman.
2019 – 2022

Computer Vision Engineer

Aperam, one of the world's largest stainless steel producers
  • Built a fully automatic inspection system that detects and classifies defects on moving steel strip.
  • Supported innovative automation projects that needed computer vision, from flame and coil detection to verifying crane hooks.
  • Designed intuitive interfaces that combine data from the whole production process.
  • Helped speed up the move to Industry 4.0.
education
2016 – 2018

Master of Engineering: Computer Science

KU Leuven · Human-Machine Interaction

Thesis: an augmented reality web app that recognises physical 3D molecule models through the camera and explains the hybridisation of atoms step by step in 3D.

2013 – 2017

Bachelor of Engineering

KU Leuven · Computer Science & Electrical Engineering

Bachelor test team project: autonomous Raspberry Pi and Lego cars that followed line roads with a camera, dodged obstacles and coordinated routes over a network.
